Contains the active ingredient : Topiramate which is an antiepileptic medicine which is also used to prevent migraine.

Topiramate prevents fits by stabilizing  the electrical nerve activity in the brain. It works in three ways :

Topiramate affects the activity of two neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are natural chemicals that are involved in transmitting messages between the nerve cells. Topiramate enhances the action of GABA, which is a neurotransmitter that acts as a natural 'nerve calming' agent. 

Topiramate also decreases the action of glutamate, which is a neurotransmitter that normally has a 'nerve exciting' effect.

Topiramate also works by preventing sodium from entering the nerve cells when they begin to fire rapid and repetitive electrical signals. This prevents the electrical signal from building up and passing on. All three actions help prevent fits.

It is not fully understood how topiramate works to prevent migraines, but it does reduce the number of attacks that are experienced and their severity. The medicine has to be taken on a continuous basis to prevent migraines. It doesn't work to treat individual migraine attacks.

What is it used for?

To treat epilepsy. Topiramate is used to help control generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal epilepsy) and partial seizures.

To treat a type of severe childhood epilepsy called Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

To prevent migraine in adults, for example in people who have three or more migraine attacks per month, or frequent migraines that significantly interfere with their daily routine.
