Mevalotin Protect 20 mg

Contains the active ingredient : Pravastatin 20 mg which is a statin medicine used to lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease.

For the sake of simplicity, there are two sorts of cholesterol; a 'bad' sort called low density lipoprotein (LDL) and a 'good' sort called high density lipoprotein (HDL). LDL is deposited in the arteries and increases the risk of heart disease by clogging and narrowing the arteries (atherosclerosis), while HDL actually protects the arteries against this.

Pravastatin works by reducing the production of LDL cholesterol by the liver. This has a knock-on effect of making the liver cells take up LDL cholesterol from the blood. Pravastatin also causes a small decrease in the production of other 'bad fats' in the blood called triglycerides, and a small increase in the level of HDL cholesterol. The overall result is lowered levels of 'bad fats' and raised levels of 'good fats' in the blood.

Statins like pravastatin have an important role in the prevention of coronary heart disease. They reduce the risk of excess cholesterol being deposited in the major blood vessels of the heart. Any blockage in the blood vessels limits the amount of blood and therefore oxygen being carried to the heart muscle. In the heart this can cause chest pain (angina) and in severe cases can result in a heart attack (myocardial infarction), while in the brain it can cause astroke.

Pravastatin is used to lower cholesterol and other bad fats in people who have high levels either due to genetics (familial hypercholesterolaemia) or as a result of diet and lifestyle. This helps to reduce the risk of the problems described above.

Pravastatin has also been shown to reduce illness and death from heart disease and stroke in people who have already had a heart attack or unstable angina. In these cases pravastatin is beneficial even for people whose cholesterol levels are normal or only slightly raised.

What is it used for?

Lowering high blood cholesterol levels (hypercholesterolaemia) when they have not been lowered sufficiently by diet and exercise alone.

Lowering genetically high blood cholesterol levels (familial hypercholesterolaemia) in children and adolescents aged 8 to 18 years of age.

Preventing illness and death from heart disease and stroke in people with high cholesterol levels (hypercholesterolaemia) and a high risk of heart disease.

Preventing further illness and death from heart disease in people who have already had a heart attack or unstable angina and who have normal or raised cholesterol levels.

Reducing cholesterol levels in people who have had an organ transplant and are taking immunosuppressant medicines.
